FAQ - Frequently asked questions

How do I take care of my piano in order to enjoy it for a long time?

The most important consideration is the humidity, along with regular tuning and regulation of the instrument by a qualified technician.

To counteract the effects of central heating we recommend using a humidifier.

A humidifier gently maintains the optimum level of humidity (up to 50%), protecting the instrument from heating damage such as cracks in the soundboard or shrinkage of the mechanical parts, thereby prolonging the service and tuning interval and protecting against nasty surprises.

Why are our instruments made in Ningbo/China?

We are proud to produce our instruments in one of the best piano factories in the world, in Ningbo.

Our partner Hailun Ningbo Ltd Co. is not only one of the most modern production plants in China, but in the world.

Using the most up-to-date production plant allows us to manufacture high-precision components of outstanding quality. The production and quality control are supervised by Wendl & Lung technicians to guarantee high European standards of manufacture. We produce a limited number of high-quality instruments rather than indulging in poor-quality mass production.

The excellent production conditions in China allow us to offer our products at a magnificent price/quality ratio unmatched by any other brand.

Are the pianos ethically produced in China?

The skilled factory workforce are highly qualified and trained by renowned master piano builders. Ningbo Hailun values these specialist workers and pays them about 25% higher wages than the norm, offering housing and social care for workers from remote regions.

The knowledge and well-being of these specialist workers are vital to the whole Wendl & Lung ethos.

Our unique quality/price ratio relies on highly automated production using CNC machines. A great deal of the piano is machine-made, meaning no fluctuation in quality during production.

Our experts in the Wendl & Lung logistics centres in Europe concentrate on the fine regulation of the action and toning, so that your piano is a joy to play.

Are poor quality or toxic materials used to build Wendl & Lung pianos?

Absolutely not. No materials are used that have toxic emissions or could compromise the health of our customers - thus no toxic varnishes, glues or solvents are employed. Our products meet all European standards. It is a basic principle of Wendl & Lung to apply traditional, robust but also innovative (as is the ALU-frame) materials.

In case of doubt we rather invest more in order to achieve higher quality then to save on material, to ensure the excellent durability, tone and touch of our piano.

Is the name Lung Chinese?

No, both Wendl & Lung are originally from Austria.

It is a fourth generation family company seeped in the traditions of Austrian piano-building. The headquarters are in the centre of Vienna, the historic world capital of music.

In this musical centre all categories in relation with the piano come together/are combined: repair shop, research section, piano exhibition space, concert hall, concert studio, recording studio, music practice rooms, school of music, competitions and workshops.

Why choose a Wendl & Lung over another piano?

Our colleagues and partners are totally convinced of the quality and value of our pianos. Our enthusiasm for innovation and our distinctive sound are renowned. Why not try a Wendl & Lung piano and make up your own mind? Convince yourself alone or with the help of a piano playing friend or music teacher!

What is the 4th pedal for?

The Technique:

The harmonic pedal allows greater emphasis on the singing overtones of the played keys or chords: the notes played are damped so that all the other strings remain free and therefore the overtones of the chord sound longer.

When playing further notes using the harmony pedal, previously played notes are damped while all other unplayed strings remain free to resonate sympathetically.

What is the Real Touch Silencer System?

The Real Touch Silencer System is a brilliant idea that makes it possible to play "silently" on a Wendl & Lung upright model.

At the flick of a switch one can play mutely: the hammer heads strike a stop rail instead of the strings. A sound-module (as in electronic pianos) integrated into the piano now produces the tone that can be heard through the headphones. You can silence your piano while still retaining its authentic touch, and practise into the early hours without disturbing the neighbours.

What is the "W & L - Bafunno Double Repetition Action"?

This double repetition feels like that of a grand piano as it requires no additional aids such as springs or rollers, but instead is exclusively based on gravity.

The unique grand piano lever flange in an upright piano permits a true ‘Una Corda’ function on the left pedal, facilitating the same sliding mechanism as in a grand piano.

In other words a quieter tone is achieved by moving the hammer over so that it strikes two strings out of three (as in a grand) rather than by moving the hammer head closer to the strings (as in a conventional upright).

Should I buy my piano on the Internet or at a piano shop?

We cannot advise you strongly enough about the risks of buying a piano over the internet, as it can be a hugely disappointing experience. Instead why not call on the passion and expertise of your local approved Wendl & Lung dealer?

The process of choosing a piano is very individual, dependent on subjective choices over everything from tone and touch to style of cabinet.

While the internet is essential for communication, we strongly believe a piano is far too important and personal an object not to be tried before purchasing.
